My family has been a dirt family for as long as I can remember. My youngest had his first desert trip when he was only a few weeks old. My husband and I bought our very first toy hauler back in 2008 it was an 18 ft with nothing but a small stove and fold down couch not big enough for all of us to even sit at one time. Our first few trips out we would lay an air mattress on the floor and another the opposite direction for the kids. We got kicked in the head multiple times throughout the night. When our long time friends and camping buddies asked us to go to Ocotillo Wells for a week during Thanksgiving we jumped on the opportunity but had to first take care of business and get a bigger trailer or we may not have come back in one piece! LOL We purchased a 30 ft Forest River sand piper tow behind.
We loved it. It had a front bedroom so we wouldn't get kicked in the head anymore and a bathtub for the dirty little kids. We continued to camp with that trailer for many years. After our daughter reached late elementary my husband was traveling for work and we never found time to use the trailer. We still held onto it just sitting empty hoping one day we would use it again. That day never came.
We moved it 9 years ago to our current home and ended up selling it. It was sad but we made it work. The boys can ride from our front gate. 2 years ago boys wanted to start going again. OH BOY!
My in- laws were kind enough to let us use theirs for a weekend or two. I was hesitant. I wasn't sure if the boys were actually going to like it again, but they did. So 2 years ago we purchased a 2007 fifth wheel Weekend Warrior CL4005. I was in heaven. This thing has one of the biggest kitchens I have ever seen. For those that don't know this model is equipped with a "Super slide" The kitchen and couch area are a pop out! I know, I know! I was just as excited! So skip forward a few years and our oldest is now 21 Living on the east coast with our first granddaughter, our middle son is a senior in hs and our youngest is now in middle school. As much as I love, love, love our trailer its 40 foot long.
Now do we really need that much space after this year?! So my husband and I went to the local RV expo (mind you we went years ago before we decided on this one) same thing happened they cost ,$60,000 to $80,000 that is on sale! and they have tried to get a little more grand with things which mind you there are some really nice ones at $80,000+, but who make a step down into the bathroom?! My poor husband almost broke his ankle just looking at them. Can you imagine if you have had a few glasses of wine?! Then you have some that the tv hangs down so low if you are 6 ft or taller you better make sure you duck, and what about the Grandma curtains and back splash? I mean come on all this advancement and I still have to look at something that belongs in my Grandmothers house! Ok, so rant over and the brings us to now. We decided to keep ours ( we have a very small payment) and just do some updating. My next blog will start the steps we took. Hope you enjoy our journey because only a few days in and I think hubby is having second thoughts....😮
